Image
Dennis Wise thinks the referee made the right call in awarding Italy a penalty against England after using VAR Former Chelsea midfielder Dennis Wise believes Italy were correctly awarded a penalty against England following a video assistant referee (VAR) review. England had looked on course for a second straight 1-0 victory after Jamie Vardy's 27th-minute strike put them ahead at Wembley. But in the closing minutes, referee Deniz Aytekin consulted a pitchside monitor after Burnley defender James Tarkowski appeared to foul Federico Chiesa inside the box. Replays showed the defender had stepped on the Italian's foot.

UPDATE 1-Nigeria earned 557.9 bln naira ($1.77 bln) in state revenue in February

Image
ABUJA, March 28 (Reuters) - Nigeria earned 557.9 billion naira ($1.77 billion) in gross revenues in February, up from 538.9 billion naira ($1.71 billion) the previous month, due to higher crude exports and prices, Accountant General Ahmed Idris said on Wednesday. The OPEC member is recovering from its worst recession in 25 years after the economy’s main driver, oil, saw a three-year plunge before prices began to recover in the past year or so. Nigeria is Africa’s largest oil producer and crude sales account for two-thirds of government revenue. The funds are shared among the country’s 36 states. The country shared revenues generated in February from crude and other sources including taxes totalling 647.4 billion naira to its three arms of government, Idris said. On Tuesday, the finance minister called an emergency meeting for next week with the head of state-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation over revenue payments. The government has borrowed from dom

The Risk of Doing Nothing

I’m forever blowing bubbles, Pretty bubbles in the air, They fly so high, nearly reach the sky, Then like my dreams they fade and die John Kellette, Jaan Kenbrovin 1918 Hardly a day goes by without a story that financial markets are in “bubble” territory. Stock markets around the world, including the FTSE All-Share, are at record highs and bond yields are at record lows. The former means that valuations are at the upper end of historic ranges. The latter has meant that many unusual things can be sold to investors anxious for yield. Recent examples include a 100-year bond with a coupon of just 2.1% that raised €2.5 billion for Austria. Possibly a better risk than the three 100-year bonds issued by Mexico in recent years but at least the Mexican government prints its own currency. Despite the money that has been made by those who have stayed invested in bonds and/or equities in recent years, there is little sign of euphoria. Rather in our experience, investors

Goldman hikes yuan exchange rate forecasts, cites U.S. trade ties

LONDON (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs has upped its 12-month yuan/dollar exchange rate forecast to 6.20 yuan from 6.45 previously, predicting that trade relations with the United States would limit China’s ability to weaken its currency. U.S. 100 dollar banknotes and Chinese 100 yuan banknotes are seen in this picture illustration in Beijing, China, January 21, 2016. REUTERS/Jason Lee/Illustration/File Photo In a note received on Wednesday, the bank said it had also raised its 3-month yuan forecast to 6.30 yuan from 6.35 CNY= earlier, while changing the 6-month forecast to 6.25 from a previous 6.40. Goldman Sachs analysts said in a research note that “the renewed focus on trade relations with the US...(and) the desire to facilitate local currency bond inclusion in international benchmarks” would offset slower Chinese growth and authorities’ uncomfortableness with further yuan appreciation. The yuan is currently trading at 6.28 versus the dollar, having rallied fro

Image
Founder and CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg After news of the Facebook data scandal , it's probably a good idea for all of us to do a Facebook audit and see who our friends are. We've probably all collected hundreds, if not thousands, over the years. It's important to trust the people you're friends with, too, since their friend list is shared each time they grant permission to an application, which means your name might be floating all over the place if you have a friend who's particularly cavalier with how he or she uses their Facebook account.
