THE GENERAL WINS NIGER

                       The Presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd), has opened up a massive lead in the presidential race in Niger State with results for 11 of the 25 local governments in the state announced. So far, Buhari has 296,100 votes, while President Goodluck Jonathan has polled 74,784 votes. In Bosso LG, APC got 36,951, while PDP secured 6,036. In Chanchaga LG,  APC garnered 58,239 to PDP’s 9,438. 15,972 people voted for Buhari in Gbako with 5,521 opting for Jonathan. Gurara LG gave Buhari 17,284 votes and Jonathan 7,803 votes, while the APC defeated the PDP with 16,368 to 2,708 votes in Katcha LG. Mariga LG gave APC 28, 463 votes and the PDP 4,351 votes. Other local governments where results have been announced are: Munya LG (APC, 12,820; PDP, 7119); Paiko LG (APC, 27,298; PDP, 8,029); Shiroro LG (APC, 27,462; PDP, 7,040). Suleja LG (APC, 38,262; PDP, 9,535) and Tafa LG (APC, 16,981; PDP, 7,168).

Presidential, N’Assembly elections vicious –Soyinka

                                     The Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has described the presidential and National Assembly elections as the most vicious, unprincipled, vulgar and violent he had ever witnessed. Soyinka, in an interview with The Guardian UK on Sunday, was quoted as saying, “We’re talking about a very positive response by the public in terms of determination to register and vote but, you know, this has been one of the most vicious, unprincipled, vulgar and violent exercises I have ever witnessed. “I just hope we won’t go down as being the incorrigible giant of Africa.” According to Soyinka, the stakes appear to be so high that all scruples have been set aside and it’s very distressing to compare this election with that of 1993, which was one of the most orderly, civilised and resolute elections the country ever had. PDP, APC clash over Lagos poll results delay

                                                  The agent of the Peoples Democratic Party for the presidential election collation in Lagos State, Mr. Wahab Owokoniran, and his All Progressives Congress counterpart, Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi, on Monday morning hotly disagreed during the collation exercise at the Independent National Electoral Commission Lagos office. The quarrel began immediately the Collation Officer for Lagos State, Prof. Isaac Adewole, announced the suspension of the collation of the presidential poll till 8am . Before Adewole suspended the collation of the result at 1.48am, electoral officers of four local government areas had submitted the results of their respective council areas, while the results for the remaining 16 local government areas had yet to be returned to the INEC office.                                      The Presidency on Sunday urged supporters of President Goodluck Jonathan against panic over some “fake results” of the Saturday’s presidential elections, allegedly being released by opposition party. Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, made the Presidency’s position known on his Facebook page. Abati asked supporters of the President not to be fooled by the said results, saying the only confirmed result so far was the one from Ekiti State. He expressed delight that Jonathan won in the South-West state. He also noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission had addressed the issue of the fake results. Jonathan lead in Imo state

      The results of the presidential election in 11 out of the 27 local government areas in Imo State collated on Sunday in Owerri, capital of the state, show that President Goodluck Jonathan, who is the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, is clearly leading his main opponent, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Major-Gen Muhammadu Buhari (retd.). The collated results were from Ideato North, Isiala-Mbaino, Isu, Obowo, Ohaji-Egbema,. Okigwe, Owerri Municipal, Owerri West, Nwangene, Oru East and Ideato South LGAs. Jonathan polled a total of  210,022 votes to grab the lead ahead of Buhari, who had 50,977  votes. The Independent National Electoral Commission has said that despite the extension of Saturday’s elections till Sunday in some parts of the country, the results of the presidential poll will be declared on Monday(today). INEC Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, gave the assurance   as some of results from wards, local government areas and states continued to emerge on Sunday. For instance, results from Osun and Ogun states showed the All Progressives Congress Presidential candidate, Maj.Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, defeating President Goodluck Jonathan. Police teargas APC women at Rivers INEC office

Some women belonging to the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State were on Monday morning teargased by policemen around the INEC headquarters on Aba Road after they tried to take their grieviances over Saturday’s presidential elections in the state to the Commission’s office. The women, donning black attires and led by House of Representatives candidate for Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area, Maureen Tamuno, came in several buses from various parts of the state as early as 8:30am to pour out their frustrations. Armoured tanks barricaded the two lanes leading to INEC office while gun-wielding police and military policemen in large numbers were positioned in strategic points in the vicinity. The wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, on Monday told the presidential campaign organisation of the All Progressives Congress that “she is a woman of peace that can never be identified with electoral violence.” She said there was no way somebody like her who occupies the exalted office of the President of the African First Ladies Mission would be promoting violence under any guise. The Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum has condemned the use of card readers for the forthcoming elections. The governors also condemned the Independent National Electoral Commission under the leadership of Prof. Attahiru Jega, over its preparedness of the elections. The governors said this at an interactive session with the media and civil society organisations themed ‘Sustenance of Democratic Values and National Development’ in Lagos on Tuesday. The governors at the forum were: Governors Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom), Liyel Imoke (Cross River), Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa), Aliyu Babangida (Niger), Sule Lamido (Jigawa), Bala Ngilari (Adamawa), Ayo Fayose (Ekiti) and Olusegun Mimiko (Ondo). President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday sacked Gen. Martin Luther Agwai (rtd.) as the Chairman of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme. Explosion kills 12 in Maiduguri marketq

No fewer than 12 persons were killed in a fresh suicide attack on Monday Market in Maiduguri, a member of the youth vigilance group, who craved anonymity, told our correspondent on the telephone. The source said 12 persons were also injured in the Tuesday’s blast and had been taken to a hospital in the Borno State capital for treatment. He said, “The explosion was from a planted bomb at the crowded market.” The source said the incident happened at about  4.30pm, causing pandemonium  in the market. President Goodluck Jonathan has fired Martin-Luther Agwai as the head of his government’s intervention unit, SURE-P. Mr. Agwai is a respected former Defence Chief, who led United Nation missions in Sudan, amidst other career runs. Mr. Agwai was appointed by Mr. Jonathan to head SURE-P, a department created by the government to deploy saved fuel subsidy money for the provision of critical infrastructure and jobs. In a statement Tuesday, presidential spokesperson, Reuben Abati, named Ishaya Dare Akau as the new head of SURE-P, Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme. The new SURE-P Chairman hails from Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State and holds Bachelors’ Degrees in the Arts and Law. The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party says every person that attended the one-million-man march of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos received at least N5,000 each. The party in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Mr. Taofik Gani, said groups that attended the march received between N1m and N10m. The PDP said the APC was deceiving Lagosians by tagging the march as “one-million-march” because the Teslim Balogun Stadium where the walk ended, could only accommodate 24,000 people. The PDP said during the rally, posters and billboards of its candidates were vandalised while two people in private vehicles were attacked for carrying the sticker of the PDP governorship candidate, Mr. Jimi Agbaje. Nigerian city of Maiduguri hit by multiple blasts

At least five blasts have killed 50 people and injured 56 in the city of Maiduguri in north-eastern Nigeria, an official has told the BBC. Two crowded markets and a busy bus station were targeted by suicide bombers, witnesses said. Witnesses in one of the markets described gory scenes with men, women and children lying on the ground. Maiduguri was once the stronghold of the militant group Boko Haram, which is seeking to establish an Islamic state. The Islamist group has not yet commented on the latest attacks, but it has used suicide bombers before. After being pushed out of Maiduguri last year, the Islamist fighters retreated to the nearby Sambisa Forest from where they launched attacks on villages and towns in the north-east, taking over swathes of territory. Security agencies begins investigation on Nigerians link with ISIS

Nigerian Security agencies has sprunked into action to uncover the links of some Nigerians with the militant terrorist group, Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, ISIS, according to reports. Report says the security agencies decided to carry out the investigation as a direct fallout of reports that a son of a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mohammed Uwais, had allegedly joined the militant group. The report quotes a top security source in Abuja as saying that: "Besides Uwais' son, we are trailing more Nigerians, who recently travelled to the Middle East. I cannot give you details for now. What I can say is that the militant group is recruiting Nigerians." It was also gathered that the Department of State Services, DSS, had declared a manhunt for the son of Uwais. According to the report, the younger Uwais was said to have gotten a Turkish visa in Abuja and traveled to Syria through Turkey with the aim of linking up with the Islamic militants who are
