Independence Gift to the president

Image
Dear President Buhari, INDEPENDENCE DAY GIFT I am offering my Volks Wagen Bettle 1500 model to you as a gift to celebrate Nigeria's Independence Day. Since you steered the country into recession, only the citizens bear the brunt of your actions and inactions, while nothing has changed in you and your family's opulent lifestyle. I have a belief adjusting your lifestyle to set example of austerity measures will earn you accolades in Nigeria and respect globally. Sir, the country will save a lot if those fuel-guzzling 8-cylinder engines in the presidential fleet are reduced and your car replaced with a 4-stroke engine car. The car is in clean shape with sound engine to boot. It is just as fit as fiddle. But if you think the sound of the engine will cost Nigeria another N20m to format your auditory system in London, I will retrofit a silent engine into it before delivery. Attached herewith is the picture of the car for your perusal. Accept the assurance of my change if you ...

Corruption and Justice

Written by Animashaun Segun Nurudeen Corruption and Justice : Nigeria, A Case Study. Not long, before the advent of the just concluded Olympics in Rio, was the controversial issue of the Budget Padding where a prominent figure of the Nation's ruling cabinet was caught up in the prismatic web spurned by some unknown hands, perhaps more to bite the victim's finger than to expose the corrupt practices of the said tradition; i.e budget padding which as we later come to know was a practice that has been in operation since the very birth of the nation. This has not been the first time such alarming practice would be whistle-blown, but like fire with nothing to burn upon, the news together with the people's reaction died as quickly as it had been propagated to the knowledge of the common man. Sometimes ago was the issue of a high-ranking public office holder,  a woman in particular, who had spent some ridiculous amount of money purchasing for herself bullet-proof cars. May I re...

Govt scraps HNDs, merges polys with varsities

Govt scraps HNDs, merges polys with varsities From Madu Onuorah, Abuja[/b]THE Federal Executive Council (FEC) yesterday approved a comprehensive reform of Nigeria's tertiary education system, scrapping the award of the Higher National Diploma (HND) by the nation's polytechnics. In effect, the award of the HND will be limited to only the students currently admitted for the programmes. Also, all the programmes currently being run by the polytechnics, which are not technology-based, and which are about 70 per cent, will be scrapped. Under the new rule, the polytechnics will now become campuses of the proximate universities with the Vice Chancellors of those universities appointing provosts for the polytechnics, subject to the ratification of the Universities Councils. The polytechnics will now be limited to award of the National Diploma (ND) while those desirous of further education will be awarded the Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) by the proximate university. Why to serve Nigeria is not by force

Abimbola Adelakun In the 1930s, two boxing bouts took place between fighters of the United States and German origins; both fights were proxies for the political conflicts between their countries. In 1936, when Joe Louis, an African-American, and Max Schelling, a German, met in New York to exchange punches, their fight became emblematic of the contestation between democracy the US purportedly represented and the fascism of Adolf Hitler’s Germany. When Schelling defeated Louis, Hitler made a huge capital out of it and Americans, understanding the broader implication of their loss, wept loudly. That match was no ordinary entertainment; citizens of both countries had fervently invested themselves and their nationalistic ideals into the blows both men exchanged. The boxing arena became a symbolic space where the political legitimacy of either country was staged. Two years later, the fighters met again. This time Louis trumped Schelling in a knockout by the third round but the sweet ...
