The Republic of Seychelles is the smallest country in Africa by land mass. It has an area of 451 km2. Seychelles is an island country made up of a cluster or chain of one hundred and fifteen islands. It is located in the Indian Ocean. The capital is Victoria. The country is located 1500km away from the coast of East Africa. The country has a population of about 92,000 inhabitants which is the lowest population of any African country. Seychelles got its independence from the United Kingdom in 1976. Seychelles is one the Commonwealth countries. The country is also a member of the Southern African Community, the African Nations and also the United Nations. Seychelles has the highest Gross Domestic Product per capita in Africa. It also has one of the highest Human Development Index in Africa. But even with the country’s productive economy, the level of poverty in the country is still at a very high level. The high degree of poverty is as a result of a high level of income inequality and low wealth distribution. The country is lead by a president and his cabinet. The president is elected into office based on popular votes and has a five-year term of office. The current president of Seychelles is Danny Faure.
Geography As an Island country, Seychelles can be found in the Indian Ocean. It is located in the Northeast of Madagascar and almost 1600km to the east of Kenya. Seychelles is an archipelago. It is a group or chain of islands close to each other. As an archipelago, Seychelles consist of one hundred and fifteen islands, as we have already mentioned. Most of the islands have nobody living there. But they are preserved as nature reserves. Only a group of forty-two islands are referred to as inland islands, and they make up 54 percent of the total land area of the country. Ninety-eight percent of the total population lives on these forty-two inland islands. All the islands are divided into four groups:
● The Granitic Seychelles which consists of forty-five granite based islands.

The people of Seychelles are known as Seychellois. The Seychellois are made of people from different ethnic groups who have migrated there from different parts of the world. The largest ethnic groups found in Seychelles are the African, Chinese, French, and Indians. Therefore, the country has a mixture of different people and cultures. This is evident in the Seychellois cuisines which have different aspects of African, Chinese, French, and Indian cuisine. Languages Seychelles has two official languages. They are English and French. Seychellois also speak Seychellois Creole which is a language founded upon the French with some insertion of English words and phrases. 95% of the population speak Seychellois Creole. Religion Most Seychellois practice Christianity with most of them being Roman Catholics. Just a very few percentage of the population practice Hinduism, Islam, and other non-Christian religions.
